During a Zoom presentation on Jan. 13, community partners the Minnesota Vikings, Midwest Dairy and Fuel Up to Play 60 awarded Brooklyn Middle School: A Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) School a $10,000 “Hometown Grant” to support a new grab-and-go breakfast program. Now that’s a good start to the day!

Currently in its seventh year, Fuel Up to Play 60 and the NFL’s Hometown Grant Program identifies deserving schools and awards them funding to help them meet their health and wellness goals. Each of the NFL’s 32 clubs—including the Minnesota Vikings—collaborate with local dairy representatives to provide funds to schools throughout the country.

“Healthy changes at schools nationwide requires collaboration at both the local and national level,” said Lisa McCann, wellness manager at Midwest Dairy. “Fuel Up to Play 60 is making an impact in schools across the country by enabling students to become leaders and providing them with resources to make change and build confidence and lifelong skills through teamwork. Through the unwavering support from the NFL and America’s dairy farmers, we’re working together to take action to help the students at Brooklyn Middle School get a healthy start to their school day.”

“It is a priority for the Minnesota Vikings to support the health and wellness of students across our regions,” added Brett Taber, Vikings’ executive director of social impact. “We are proud to join Midwest Dairy, our players, and the NFL on this important initiative.”

The grab-and-go breakfast program at Brooklyn Middle will be the first of its kind in Osseo Area Schools and will make breakfast more available to students, helping them fuel their bodies and be better prepared for the school day.

“On behalf of Brooklyn Middle School and the [district’s] Nutrition Services department, I want to thank the Minnesota Vikings, Midwest Dairy and the dairy farmers for this opportunity,” said Jeff Ansorge, director of Nutrition Services in Osseo Area Schools. “It’s really a great grant… [and the program] will make breakfast much more accessible to our students.”

The Jan. 13 virtual event featured school and district leaders, including Brooklyn Middle Principal Kim Monette and Superintendent Cory McIntyre, as well as Brenna Connelly, the current Princess Kay of the Milky Way, and Vikings legend Greg Coleman.
